| Tribute for: |
Arthur Thomas Finney
|
| Tribute left by: |
Maureen Nalezny (Edina, MN) |
| I am honored to have worn Lt. Col. Finney's POW bracelet as a HS sophomore in Minneapolis in 1972. I still have it. After seeing a traveling exhibit, a wall of POW names, I realized that I owed it to "Tom" and to myself to discover the rest of his story. A brave man, from what I understand, he is now resting at Arlington Cemetery. How fitting that I would seek his story out today -- the day before what would have been his 80th birthday. Love to his family from a loyal fan. |

Burton Ross
(Hartford, CT)
|
| Tribute left by: |
Jerome Lutin (Holland, PA) |
| Burton Ross, my deceased cousin, flew as a tail gunner on B-24's in WWII. As a kid, I spent hours looking at his photos and souvenirs when we visited his house. Flying missions through flak and fighters over Germany was a terrifying experience, but he did it and kept going back for more. Very young, he left high school before graduating, and his diploma was mailed to him. After the war, he worked, returned to school, earning both a BA and MA, married and raised a family. He was a true hero. |

| There you stood in your "Fly the Friendly Skies of Cambodia" t-shirt. Smiling that Cheshire-grin. Just in from Shaw AFB for the weekend. You stole my heart forever after that night's ride in the MG. Your letters told me of the "dark time in American history", but you were so proud to be Air Force. You sat for hours in your pea coat and told stories of Viet Nam. We fell so hard. I am still there with you until I hear the bells peel and have to leave you on that hill. I still love you in my dreams |

Chaplain Maj. J. Ray Stephens
(Patrick AFB, FL)
|
| Tribute left by: |
John Stephens (Crescent, OK) |
| Sunday, October 28, 1951 was a stormy, windy Sunday morning. Chaplain (Maj) Ray Stephens had just finished conducting morning services when word came that two Patrick airmen, swimming alone in surf near the closed Air Force Missile Test Center beach, were caught in a strong undertow.
The man of God became a man of action, as he and 22 others formed a human chain to bring the two men to safety. As they were pulling the two airmen to shore, rough water pummeled the men. Suddenly their grips failed, breaking the chain. Stephens was swept away by the strong current and drowned. The two airmen, though, were saved.
Maj. Gen. William Richardson, AFMTC commander, recommended that Stephens be awarded the Soldier's Medal, posthumously, for his act of heroism, voluntarily displayed, in giving his life attempting to save others.

| I always told him he was my hero.....and he knew it was true. My dad taught me how to believe in myself, to have the greatest courage amidst my greatest fears. To meet life head on and without hesitation. To say what you mean and mean it. Love for my country and the men and women who have given everything so that I can still say "MY country". Integrity; not by what he said, but by how he lived his life. He kept his country's secrets - an oath is an oath after all. He was my hero, still is. |
